Nr. 1: 193,0 km - Oct 06 - Iran |
193 km - cycled in nine and a half hours. In the iranian desert there was nothing to see,
and in october the climate was all right. Also we were quite fit. But the targetet
240 kilometers to Yazd we did not complete, as it got dark and Bennys ass hurted badly.

| Kupayeh - Meybad (Iran) - 18.10.2006 - 193,0 km | |||
Nr. 2: 191,3 km - Sep 07 - China |
Actually this trip was easier than it seems. At least we lost more than 3000 meters in altitude.
But we were still happy when we finally arrived, as it was already dark and also we had a
cycling time for more than nine hours. As well, the free wheel in our hub broke, and the last
40 kilometers we had to cycle without it. |

| Karakul lake - Kashgar (China) - 23.08.2007 - 191,3 km | |||
Nr. 3: 172,6 km - Apr 08 - China |
Our longest cycling time so far we had when we went to Kunming in April 2008. We cycled more than 10
hours, and also in the beginning we had a climb of 500 Meters uphill, but also finally a 1000 meter
downhill. But again, an unexpected 300 meter climb just before Kunming was normally not too much,
but after already eight hours cycling very exhausting.

Nr 1: just 1,18 KM - Oct 07 - Aksai Chin Plateau |
Only 1,18 Kilometers - 10 Minutes cycling time! How can that be?
Well, actually we wanted to reach Sirengau (Tielong) on the day before, but we saw some houses flooded in a seemingly expanded lake. Thats why we though that Sirengau was not there any more, and we camped. But it was, and on the next day we stopped for the rest of the day after just 1,2 km, as we had enough of the cold after 10 days camping, 3 nights on an altitude of more than 5000 meters. |

(1,18 km to Sirengau - 23.10.07

Nr 2: 4,2 km - Mar 08 - Tibet - stopped by soldiers |
In the end of march, ten days after the uprise in Lhasa and Tibet, we had hoped that the situation had perhaps relaxed again. But seemingly we were wrong. The first day we were still able to cycle 40 kilometers out of Lhasa, find a protected spot and camp the first night. But just after starting on day 2, we were stopped by one army and one police vehicle each. We had to show them where we had camped, and after that we were interrogated: What are you doing in Tibet, where are you going, did you come to Tibet on a permit and tour, why not, and so on. Finally we were taken back to Lhasa by police car and we had to leave Lhasa by train. |

Nr 3-5: 11,5 / 17,0 / 17,4 km - Oct 08 - starting to cycle to Tibet |
After our four-week brake we were totally exhausted. We had to wait in Kashgar for
a new fork after the old one broke. This was not helpful for our body-condition.
Neither was the daily consumption of beer whilst playing cards with the wonderful
couple Maggie and Chris from England. We we then were on the first climb to almost
5000 meter, we could just not cope with the thin air, and were totally exhausted,
for three days in a row, after only 11 - 17 kilometers.

The highest temperature: 48° |
Nr 1: 48 degrees - June 07 - India |
Extremely hot it was in the summer 2007 in India. In June and July, cycling through
the extended Ganges river plains was just unbearable. Once we started cycling at
1 o'clock at night, and often we stopped to have a break between 9am and 5pm.
The worst heat was over once we had reached Gilgit in Pakistan on an altitude of
1500 meters.

| |
coldest temperature whilst camping: -25° |
Nr 1: minus 25 degrees - Oct / Nov / Dec 07 - Tibet |
Several times the thermometer was on the edge, meaning 25 degrees below zero, or
perhaps even more. The first time it was that cold, was when we were camping in the
Aksai Chin Plateau, a high plateau with an altitude of more than 5000 metres.
We measured -25 degrees in the outside part of the tent. In the inside part of the tent
we measured never more than minus 18 degrees though.

The highest pass: 5401m |
Nr 1: 5401m - Quishan La Pass - Tibet |
The highest pass we reached with our bicycle on 25.10.2007, cycling from Sumxi up to the 5401
meter high pass. Extremely slow we went up the last kilometers as the air was not containing
much oxygen on that altitude.
Still, this pass was perhaps not the most difficult one for us. We were already a bit aclimatised and a bit more fit than in the beginning. The first (almost) 5000 meter pass was by far more difficult, when we were neither in good shape nor aclimatised to altitude. This was the 4980 meter high chiragsaldi pass, the first one of that altitude we had to cross. |
The highest point by foot: 6000 Meters |
Nr 1: 6000m - near Karo La pass - Tibet |
The highest point by foot Benny reached whilst trekking in Tibet in the middle of
march. We went up to 6000 meters, but not up higher to the 6150 meter high peak,
as it started snowing, and also we felt the altitude a lot.
The highest point which we reached together was almots 5700 meter on the kora, meaning circumambulation of the holy mount Kailash in western Tibet in November 2007. |
